Jersey combinations have been changing for decades. Some traditions have been saved or returned, while others were mysteriously added for reasons that still need to be answered today. How do you choose the best (and worst) jerseys today? It was a tough decision, but here are the countdowns.
They no longer exist, but shoutout to the Buffalo Sabres for their yellow on the front and navy on the back alternates last season. Those are hands down the worst, disgusting, mortally ugly uniforms I have ever seen.
Top 5 Worst Jerseys of 2015-2016
5. Calgary Flames

Since 1998, the Calgary Flames have used black in some extent in their uniforms. Nearly 20 years later, the look still has a touch that is really not needed. There was a time where they had a horse in their black alternate jersey, possibly in correlation to their arena name: The Saddledome. That look has mercifully been gone for a decade, but the Flames still have a black C on their home jersey. They have since added an alternate with a smaller black C and “Calgary” joining it. It is okay, but the Flames really needed to go back to their red and white combination. That was a true hit, and it was briefly used as an alternate in the early 2010’s. Until then, the black gives them the “charred” nickname. Not good. At least the roadies look good.
4. Ottawa Senators

The Senators decided to ditch their original logo in 2007, but their current logo has been used since 1998. However, the current design was not used until 2007, and Ottawa had a more deranged logo before that. Also, they had a widening stripe that made the “Fish Sticks” Islander teams impressed. The current senator logo is decent, and more organized, but I like the original logo a little bit more. Their current alternate/throwback is an upgrade from their modern black jersey that said “Sens” on it, but I cannot help but think of those Pittsburgh Steelers throwback jerseys when I see them. It is not as garish, though, and it is the best alternate jersey they have had in their history. The Senators have made progress to look better, but they still have a ways to go.
3. Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins are doing something right this season. They have alternates that show what their jerseys should look like. Look at the fan with the glasses in the photo. Take notes Pittsburgh. Here are the problems with Pittsburgh’s combinations. First, the Vegas gold looks awful. It is like they threw their 80’s jerseys in the laundry a billion times, and the color faded. That color should not be touched, especially for a city where gold, real gold, is prominent in their other sports teams. Second, I am no fan of the skating penguin. I know others like it, and it was the “original” look. At the end of the day, however, that look should be reserved for Cartoon Network. My version of an ideal jersey set is this: bring back the Robo-Penguin from the 90’s (one of the few decent 90’s logos) using the jersey combination from the late 80’s (Mario Lemieux-era). For an alternate jersey, use the 70’s light blue look using the 90’s logo. This combination would look great and do a better job at portraying Pittsburgh hockey.
2. Los Angeles Kings

Black and white will never be mistaken for too fancy, but that is because it is boring. The San Antonio Spurs and Oakland Raiders would look like nothing without an emphasis on silver. Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Nets look like nothing. The New York Islanders alternates are also the same combination now they are officially in the trap that is called the Barclays Center, which basically strips color out of any team. The Los Angeles Kings, however, make this list for two reasons. One: Los Angeles loves color. The Lakers are a dazzling purple and gold, the Clippers emphasize in red, the Dodgers rock the big blue, and the new LA Rams will likely bring back the royal blue and gold soon. The Kings seem to ruin the tradition. Two: they actually used to rock the color combinations. Purple was the go-to color. I would not go back to the 80’s design. The Lakers look good with those colors, but the Kings do not, and they have shown those problems in recent years when they brought those unis back temporarily. Of course, they certainly will not return to the “Burger King” logo from the 1996 (What in the world were the designers thinking, anyway?). The Kings, however, have to bring the purple back. The purple and black royal crest jerseys looked great, and the purple alternates with the crown logo is probably the best look the Kings have ever had. Bring it back. Now.
1. Anaheim Ducks

May Disney please have mercy! How disgraced this franchise would be if they did not have a Stanley Cup! Some people loved the original look, but let us be very, very real with ourselves. Jade and eggplant are an awful combination. That “Wild Wing” jersey was eye-popping, and not in a good way. People probably went blind. Today, Disney does not have any affiliation, and the Ducks have had a slightly better combination. Their default jerseys are acceptable, but their new orange jerseys are atrocious. I can deal with the old duck mask and crossed sticks, but that wedge is literally a Green Bay cheesehead. The entire design looks disorganized and the orange just does not work. Philly and Edmonton get a pass for their orange jerseys because my complaints would be redundant. This is the only team where I do not have a better idea. The Ducks should just scrap their designs and go back to the drawing board. They have looked like ugly ducklings since their inception.

5. Winnipeg Jets

Remember when the Atlanta Thrashers originally planned on moving to Winnipeg? The idea of the team being called the Winnipeg Thrashers would have blown the phone systems up from MTS Centre to Nunavut (assuming there are phones up there). Thankfully, the previous name “Jets” returned to the NHL. They decided to make a new logo, which is good since the old one looked like it was squeezed into an inflexible circle, to honor the Canadian military. Their home and away jerseys have remained unchanged since the relocation, and it could be an ideal model for the other modern teams to follow. The Jets have never had an alternate jersey for either the old or new team, and it has seemingly paid off with the fashion police. Good job, Winnipeg!
4. Detroit Red Wings

Classic Six jerseys will certainly get a nod here. The Detroit Red Wings have had the same look for over 30 years, and the design really did not look that much different before that, either. The two jerseys are basically identical (outside of the dominant color, of course), and the design is widely regarded as a fashion A+. Sometimes I wonder what a Detroit alternate would look like. Then again, I do not think it would last more than one game. This design will continue to take over Detroit for a very long time.
3. Montreal Canadiens

Modern fans will look at Detroit’s unis as boring, but Montreal’s jerseys have something everyone could love. There is nothing fancy about them, but they have some notable features. The blue stripes along the gut and the sleeves add some flare to another Classic Six jersey. Lots of rankings have labeled this to be the best jersey in North American Sports. The reason why I left Montreal at three is because their road jerseys do not look as sharp. There is not enough red on those jerseys to impress me. If they change the away pants to red, then maybe they will get my support.
2. Dallas Stars

Flashback to 2012. The Stars probably has dullest look ever. It had that look that makes the team look worn down and begging to relocate. If you do not know what I am talking, take a look at the St. Louis Rams design. Not the gold alternates, but the default design. What an eyesore. The Stars needed a serious makeover, themselves. The jerseys looked too plain and the colors did not look sharp. Then came these new doozies. The brighter green, the limited amount of black, and perhaps the best logo ever created. The D cutting into the Lone Star logo pretty much brought the franchise back to life, and it is showing in the current standings. The credit is given where it is due.
1. New Jersey Devils

The word “jersey” is literally in their name, but there is more. The New Jersey Devils came into the NHL with an extremely tough challenge. The team was playing in a state that was sandwiched in between two HUGE markets. Unlike the Nets, the Devils had to fight with THREE others teams for popularity: the Broad Street Bullies in Philly, the dynasty of the New York Islanders, and the Classic Six New York Rangers from Madison Square Garden. Some teams would work too hard to gain attention. The Devils, however, have made just one significant change to their uniforms. They changed their secondary color from dark green to black in the early 90’s. Today, they retain their original Devil logo positioned in a sneaky “nJ” stance and carefully placed stripes on their sleeves and socks. This results in a look that would be approved at Prom or a special gala. It also helps that their color combination makes other teams believe that they are actually entering Hell. They may not be an Original Six, but the Devils are by far the best dressed team in NHL history, and they have three Stanley Cups to add to it. I would gladly pay $300 for my own Devils sweater. I guess Jersey is known for more than just Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen.
